Frequently Asked Questions
Do you do free consultations?
I offer a complimentary first consultation where we can discuss your vision for your dress in detail. During this appointment, I will provide professional suggestions for any potential improvements and adjustments to your design. Afterward, I will prepare a custom quote, and we can go over the pricing together.
You’ll then have the option to decide if you’d like to move forward with Sewing by Karen or continue exploring other quotes. If you choose to proceed, a deposit of $200 is required to begin. The remaining balance can be paid either as we progress or upon pick-up of your completed dress.
When should I book my fitting?
We highly recommend scheduling your appointment as soon as you purchase your dress. To ensure each bride receives the personalized attention she deserves, I limit the number of clients I take on each event month.
If you have not yet found your perfect gown but would like to secure your spot with me, please don’t hesitate to reach out! I would be honored to work with you and assist in bringing your vision to life.
What do I need to bring?
For the best experience during your fitting, please bring your bridal gown, shoes, and all foundation garments (such as your bra, shapewear, or sticky bra). It’s also helpful to bring along one of your most supportive friends for an extra set of eyes and encouragement.
Additionally, please have your schedule with you so we can conveniently book your follow-up fittings before you leave.
How much do alterations cost?
The cost of alterations can vary based on the unique design and construction of your gown, as well as the type of work required. On average, bridal gown alterations range from $500 to $800. If resizing is needed, the cost typically falls between $700 and $1000.
For bridesmaids' dresses and other formal gowns, alterations generally range from $75 to $150, though the final cost may be higher or lower depending on the complexity of the work. I’ll always provide a clear quote after assessing your dress to ensure you know exactly what to expect. My goal is to make sure your gown fits perfectly and you feel beautiful on your special day!
How long will the appointment be?
Each bridal fitting is scheduled for one hour, and a typical first fitting usually takes around 60 minutes. If you feel that additional time will be needed, please don't hesitate to let me know so I can ensure we have enough time to focus on every detail.
If you're bringing more than one dress to your fitting, please inform me in advance so we can adjust the appointment time accordingly.
Do you make custom gowns or veils?
While I do not create custom gowns, I specialize in crafting beautiful, custom veils. Typically, purchasing a gown that closely matches your vision and making modifications is a more efficient, cost-effective, and streamlined option for most brides.
I’m happy to help you find the perfect gown and make it truly yours with personalized adjustments!
Are you able to modify my mom’s (or grandma’s) gown or veil?
Yes! I absolutely love working on projects that involve modifying your mom's wedding gown or veil—these are truly special to me! It’s such a meaningful way to transform "something old" into something new and personal for your big day.
Let’s schedule a consultation to discuss your vision and create a plan to make it exactly what you’ve imagined.
I’m planning on losing weight. How will this affect the process?
We typically begin the alteration process about three months prior to your event, giving you ample time to reach your weight goals. By the time we start alterations, it’s ideal to be in a maintenance phase to ensure the best fit.
If you’re taking medication that may affect your weight or are planning a medical procedure, please let me know. I’m happy to work with you to create a plan that accommodates your needs.
Please note, if alterations need to be redone due to changes after the initial work has been completed, additional charges may apply. My goal is to make sure everything fits perfectly and you feel confident on your special day
